The painting is a horse and rider outrunning a storm. The scenery, hilly grasslands, is typical to this area and dark skies of the storm fill the background. Funk says he chose to paint a rider in his early 30s because he felt youth was important in the rodeo events.

"I feel the energy from these young guys. They are the ones giving all they got in the rodeo" he says. "It is the young people that ride the bulls or other rodeo events."

The rider has a belt buckle from the Williams Lake Stampede 2007. The belt is a small detail but most people noticed it right away at the unveiling.

Funks says all his paintings include three elements - temperature, time of day, and a story. In the painting you can see the time of day because of the shadow crossing the riders face. Funk says only at about two in the afternoon would you see that type of shadow. The temperature is warm because the rider has placed his jacket on his saddle. And the story is about the rider outrunning the storm. Funk feels viewers are more comfortable if they can see those elements in a painting.
